Induction Courses - Resources

RESOURCES

The Resources screen is part of the Course Module page and is where administrators upload eLearning content (resources) for the user to view or read while completing the module.

Managing Resources

A module must have at least one resource as this is the content the user will view or be directed to.

Several resources can be added to a single module if required. For example, a module may consist of Part A and Part B. Or there may be a PPT, a video, an interactive presentation and a link to a procedure stored in the organisations Intranet.

Resources will be displayed to the user in the order displayed in the list.

 

Add New Resource

To add a new resource, from the Module page:

  1. Click 'Add'

  2. Complete the fields (see table 'Definitions of Fields' below)

  3.  Click 'Save'

The details captured for each course may vary slightly between each system configuration. Fields marked with * are mandatory

Definition of Fields

Resource Type

Select 'File' if a file is to be uploaded

Select 'Link' if an external link is to be used

Resource Name

Enter the Resource name

Upload

If the resource type is a file, click 'Upload'

.jpeg, .pdf, .docx etc files can all be uploaded as a resource

In order to be a SCORM presentation, the file uploaded must be a .zip file

Unpacking Time

When uploading SCORM files, it is important to allow the system at least 5 - 10 minutes to "unpack" the files. Prior to this the resource will display as a .zip file and not a SCORM file. Saving, logging out and then logging back in can also assist in this process.

 

Link Address

If the resource type is a file, copy and paste the URL

Description

Enter a description or instructions relevant to the individual resource, such as 'read the full document then return to this page to complete the assessment.'

Display in Popover

Tick to enable the resource to open in an 'popover' window i.e. it sits in front of the course navigation screen.

This enables a 'close' button to be displayed in the presentation. Always select this option for PDF files.

Responsive Presentations

The popover option IS required for PDF resources. This ensures navigation tools are available to the end user and ensures every page is viewed prior to being marked as complete.

The popover option is NOT recommended for responsive SCORM resources (ie - SCORM content that adapts to different device sizes such as mobile phones). Errors may display in presentations when this is selected on mobile devices.

The popover option is NOT recommended for links and URL resources.

 

Time Delay (seconds)

Enter time delay in seconds

The time delay inserts a pause before the close button appears. In other words, setting a time delay can help prevent a user from closing the resource before completing it. The close button is disabled until the time delay is reached. If the resource is not SCORM, depending upon the number and length of the slides/ presentation format, it is recommended to set the time delay for at least 2 minutes.

Note this feature can only be utilised in conjunction with the 'Display in Popover' option

View Resource

Before assigning the course to users, it is important to ensure the resource displays as expected.

To view a resource, from the Resources section within the Module page:

  1. Click on the file name

  2. View the resource and ensure it displays as expected

  3. Edit the resource if necessary

  4. Click 'Save' to save the resource

  5. Click 'Save' to save changes to the module

The resource must be uploaded and the module saved and re-opened before the link will be available. 

Sort Resources

Resources will be displayed to the user in the order they appear in the list.

To resort the order resources will play, from the Resources section within the Module page:

  1. Click 'Sort' on the resource to be moved

  2. Drag and drop to the correct location

  3. Click 'Save' to save changes to the module

Edit Resource

To edit a resource, from the Resources section within the Module page:

  1. Click 'Edit' to the far right of the resource

     

  2. Edit fields as relevant

  3. Click 'Save' to save the resource

  4. Click 'Save' to save changes to the module

Delete Resource

To delete a resource, from the Resources section in the Module page:

  1. Click 'Delete' to the far right of the resource

  2. In the pop-up that appears, click 'Delete' to completely delete the resource from the system

  3. Click 'Save' to save the module

Resource Material

Resources can be made available in the form of JPEGs, PDFs, PowerPoint's, SCORM files, HTML5 files etc or a resource can be a link to videos or documents/ procedures held on external sites such as YouTube, Lucidity Intranet, Google Drive etc.

It is recommended all PPT files are converted to either PDF or SCORM (instructions below) to ensure the end user is forced to view each individual page within the presentation.

End User Instructions

It is highly recommended that the final screen in any resource includes instructions to direct the user back into the Lucidity system where they will need to complete the assessment (where relevant) and complete the declaration. The course will not be marked complete until the declaration has been submitted. An example of how this may look is shown below. 

PDF Files

PDF files can be be uploaded as a resource to an Induction module. A PPT can be converted to a PDF and then uploaded this way.

When completing the course, the PDF will be displayed to the end user within the browser with navigation tools displayed at the top of the screen. The user is forced to view every page within the PDF before being marked as complete. In order for this functionality to take effect, the 'Display in Popover' option must be selected.

SCORM and HTML5 Presentations

Lucidity Induction supports SCORM and HTML5 presentations.  

 

There are a number of software packages used to create SCORM and HTML5 presentations. Important settings include:

  • Target platform: LMS (Learning Management System, which is what Lucidity Induction is)

  • Format: HTML5 or SCORM 1.2

  • Output file type: .zip

It is important to ensure that the SCORM or HTML5 presentation are exported as a .zip file. In order to upload the presentation to Lucidity Induction as a resource, the .zip file is uploaded 'as-is' to the desired module within the course. Lucidity Induction will then un-zip the file and create the appropriate folder structure for the presentation.

Resource Format and Size

The speed and type of files uploaded will have an impact on the user's learning experience. The following are some guidelines to the size limits of files that should be uploaded as courses in Lucidity Induction:

  • Videos should be less than 30mb. Videos should be encoded with a bit rate of 250Kb/sec to max 350Kb/sec so streaming will work on a wide range of internet connection speeds.

  • PowerPoint's should be less than 10mb

  • Output files (like the above pdf, ppt, pps, swf, etc) for a course from any authoring tools like Articulate, Captivate, etc should be less than 200mb

  • Zip folders should be less than 100mb (contact Lucidity Support for assistance with larger files)

It is also important check with the organisations' internal IT department to verify the compatibility of desired output formats with the network and firewalls. For instance, some firewalls block Java applets due to potential security risks. Output formats that require browser plug-ins other than ones that are provided as a default with the browser installation (such as Flash with Internet Explorer).

Converting PowerPoint to SCORM

To easily convert PowerPoint presentations to SCORM for free, try iSpring:

  1. Once the application is downloaded and installed, open up PowerPoint. iSpring will be a new tab in the ribbon

  2. Open the existing PowerPoint presentation to be converted

  3. Check the animations and transitions for each slide are correct

  4. The presentation can be vamped up further, by adding narration or audio to each slide by clicking onto iSpring Pro Record Audio or Manage Narration

  5. The presentation can also be set to make it look like a video (i.e. no need for learner to click through to next slide)

    1. Under Transitions>Timing, set it to advance to the next slide after a certain number of seconds or at the end of the audio / narration on the slide

  6. Publish it to .zip

  7. Load the .zip file as a resource into Lucidity Induction
