Displaying inline comment fields when a respondent answers a certain way ensures you are able to capture more qualitative data relating to the question.
INLINE CONDITIONAL COMMENTS
In many cases a question in a form will require the respondent to add a comment to explain their answer, or add more information. For most Inform form fields ( See fields supported in ‘Fields that support inline comments’ table below it’s quick and easy to add an inline comment field to enable respondents to provide this information. Comments can be conditional, so that they’re only required if the respondent answers a certain way.
For example if the question was ‘Do you have any concerns about this process?' and they answered 'Yes’ then it’s likely a comment explaining their concerns would be required.
Using Inline Comments
To set a field to display an inline comment, from the Edit Form page add a new field or select an existing one.
For details on form design and adding fields see Create a New Form - Form Design
To see which form field types support inline comments see details in the table 'Inline Comments | Form Fields That Support Inline Comments' below.Once you have added a field, or selected an existing one to add an inline comment select the “Enable” checkbox under the ‘Add Comment’ heading.
To make an inline comment required for most fields the parent field must first be set to ‘Required’. The parent field is the field the inline comment is being added to. Once the parent field is set to required the ‘Required’ checkbox will display as shown below. Selecting ‘Required’ will ensure the respondent has to provide a comment.
Example
In the example shown below a the ‘Edit Form’ page is open and a checkbox field has been added to the form. The form field details include the question: ‘What types of PPE are required for this task?'. The respondent can select one or more of the checkboxes.
The inline comment has been enabled and is set to display only if certain conditions are met. In this case the ‘And’ operator has been selected and the ‘Other’ checkbox is selected.
Using these settings the comment with the label ‘What other PPE is required for this task?’ will only display if the respondent selects the 'Other’ checkbox.
This is what the respondent would see if they select “other” when completing the form.
